Burnistoun creators are back with new sitcom ‘the Scotts’ set to rival Still Game

Forget the Broons and the Nesbitt clan – there’s a new family of comedies in town that’s making the Kardashians look like Brady Bunch.

The Scotts are hysterical, dysfunctional, larger than life offspring who love and want to kill each other in equal measure.

Written and starring Burnistoun’s Robert Florence and Iain Connell, the sitcom, which hits our screens tomorrow night, is billed as the next Still Game – a comparison that frightens its creators.

The comedic duo, who have worked together for 30 years, admitted they are “breaking” it and are hoping the nation will welcome their group of well-meaning misfits into their living room and their hearts.

Father of four Robert, 44, said: ‘We fell in love with the Scots and we hope Scotland will too and recognize overblown versions of people they know in the characters.

“This is the scariest time for Iain and I as we wait and see if it makes people laugh. It must be funny from the get-go, so we’re preparing for it ahead of the series debut tomorrow night.

“There is a gap where Still Game was before, but no one can ever match what it did. It’s one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, and certainly the best Scottish sitcom of all. time.

“So the bar is too high to be crossed. But hopefully we can find our own audience and carve out our own niche. It’s going to take a while and the worry is there to begin with, but hopefully the Scots find a place in people’s hearts and there will be a lot more playoffs.

Using the ever-popular reality TV format, the show features conflicting brothers Henry and Vincent – played by Iain and Robert – their crazy aspiring sister Kylie Jenner Colette – Louise McCarthy of Scots Squad – and their more. close crazy.

The Kardashians they aren’t, but every member of the Scott Clan is a belt and their one-liners will make you spit your cocoa and seek out a gin.

Spooks actress Shauna Macdonald stars as Vincent’s fashionista and drinker Vonny, and Sharon Young stars as Henry’s heterosexual wife Laura.

Lee Greig – aka wrestler Jack Jester – plays the gentle giant of a Colette boyfriend with Rab C Nesbitt legend Barbara Rafferty reigning over them all as matriarch Moira.

Iain and Robert said that while the characters share certain traits with their own friends and family, they are too afraid to make the Scotts go crazy too similar to the people they know.

Iain said, “If we had relied on our own families, we would have been successful. But it is certainly based on elements of stories that we have heard, seen and experienced.

“We picked out little bits of their personalities that we thought were nice to fit into the characters, but we didn’t want to go too far because I was afraid my aunts would look at him and disown me.”

Robert added, “Iain and I are a double act, but instead of writing something for ourselves, we decided to make the Scotts an extended family, which meant we could bring a lot of characters.

“It’s amazing to see pros like Shauna, Barbara and Louise doing their thing alongside people like Lee, who had never done TV before. Sometimes we just took a step back and thought we were fans of our own show.

“There’s a lot of drama, a lot of slag, a lot of ribs, a few punches and a few hugs that go with it. It’s a cute mix that reflects the fun ups and downs of family life.

While Iain’s character Henry is a father and scaffolder with a traditional outlook, Vincent de Robert is a self-taught, smug, fake tan fanatic who owns his own cosmetic surgery business.

The pair are like the Scottish Gallagher brothers – always bickering and competing to be the best.

Robert and Iain, who have been friends for 30 years, are like real-life brothers who have known each other since they met at the Toonspeak drama project in Springburn when they were just 15.

They got their groundbreaking writing skits for Chewin ‘The Fat and The Karen Dunbar Show before creating their own Burnistoun skit show with characters like Quality Polis, Jolly Boy John and “up the road” couple Joe and Barry.

Iain said, “We are nothing like our characters on the show and we certainly don’t fight as much as they do. Robert and I have a brotherly relationship that comes from knowing each other for 30 years. and we continue to get along and have a good time together and have fun.

“Of course we have points in the script where we don’t agree, but we find the compromise. There are no typewriters throwing themselves through the windows, and no one storms out. We don’t have those kinds of personalities.

Robert added, “We could be exhausted for an hour or two and then we both calm down as the prospect sets in and we realize it’s just a TV show.

“I can’t wait to turn 60 and play golf. I don’t think we’ll fall out one day.

Although Robert claims to be nothing like his “tango” alter ego, he admitted that he was a fan of Vincent’s outrageous wardrobe and that he wouldn’t say no to a botox touch-up.

Robert, who is married to Jen, said: “When we were filming in cosmetic surgery I read a few of the flyers and started to think I could do a little bit.

“If we get another round, I will say they need a little extra money in the budget to get botox for me. I might as well try to have a little advantage.

“I also fell in love with Vincent’s wardrobe. The costume team would dig up ridiculous stuff that they thought was really funny onscreen and I’d love that.

“They were trying to make me look silly and I would look at myself in the mirror and think I was prettier than my normal waking up.

“I decided I should just wear a wig, a fake tan myself and cut myself like that. My wife had to tan me every two nights. I would come home from the shoot from hopping in the shower, undressing myself and my wife going upstairs and brushing me with fake tan. It was a crazy time.

The Scotts all have their own unique flair with Vincent and his Instagram influencer sister Collette leading the way in in-your-face fashion.

Iain said: “Our costume designer Denise Coombes always does a great job. We’ll get a vague idea but Denise and her team come full circle. The costumes and make-up deserve a lot of the comedy’s credit.

“I think it’s 90 percent costume and makeup and 10 percent script.”

The Friends Keep It All Crossed The Scotts will strike a chord with viewers and the wacky family will be back for a second, third and fourth series.

Robert said: “Being Scottish is like being part of a big crazy family, isn’t it? so we hope that The Scotts is popular with audiences and we can bring it back for more fun.
