Reality TV appears to be the dominant form in the industry over the past two decades.

It dates back to the 1970s, with the PBS documentary An American Family, considered the first reality TV show on television, a precursor to what was to come. Following the life of the Loud Family, it dealt with the origin of their daily life until the parents divorce and the release of one of their sons.

You can also see the OJ Simpson murder case and the ensuing trial as a turning point in reality TV. Networks and ordinary people lived their lives and schedules around the broadcast of the case.

Over the past two decades we’ve had The Osbournes, Jersey Shore, The Bachelor / Bachelorette, Big Brother; a plethora of genres and shows have emerged in reality TV.

Even sitcoms and scripted shows have embraced some aspects of reality TV, with the mock documentary genre seen on shows like The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Modern Family.

The most well-known reality show is Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Finally ending last summer, the “show” helped spur the concepts of “famous to be famous” and “15 minutes to fame”.

But why are reality TV shows so popular?

Obviously, they are much cheaper to create. You don’t need to hire professional trained actors. Ordinary people don’t get paid that much. You save more with a smaller production team and you don’t have to create a set.

But I firmly believe that reality TV does more harm than good.

A major problem is that they do not accurately reflect reality. There’s an inherent lack of trust between viewers and the show because you don’t know 100% whether or not it’s scripted or contrived. The deceptive editing, directing, coaching all help to falsely represent what is claimed to be real – everyday life. Unlike unscripted shows which fully recognize that everything is fictional, trust is completely cemented because you know what you are watching is not really reality.

Shows about outdoor survival or any other dramatic element can be forcibly created for no other reason than to keep viewers watching. If anyone seems to be having trouble, they aren’t. There’s a cameraman there, or a few members of the production crew, and if something happens to that individual, the show is over and the network could be in big trouble.

Maybe there are “good” reality TVs, and there are bad, trashy ones.

I tried to watch reality TV a bit, and one show that I watched for a while was Pawn Stars. I loved the objects brought, the stories behind them, the historical aspect. I did not like the personal interactions of the family operating the pawnshop. Finally, I got fed up. Between the interactions and the understanding of the people filmed, when the music sets in, I immediately knew what was going to happen. The predictability of this led to it being bit exciting and I stopped watching.

The only reality TV show that I have really watched religiously is Survivor. I would say it sits between reality and a game show. But when producers forcefully create moments and make them predictable, it ruins the experience for me. It still makes for some intense and raw moments, but the series has recently seen some ugly and controversial ones among its competitors, and several times I have wondered if I want to keep watching this series, my excitement to see it live decline, pass days or weeks before seeing a new episode.

Reality TV shows don’t provide a lot of substance or value to review. Once you know what’s going on, why bother to see it again? It is a unique and accomplished thing just for this moment. Many reality shows don’t last long and are therefore forgotten.

The biggest problem with reality TV is that it seems to be based on the humiliation and exploitation of the participants. On American Idol, how many contestants were good singers, and how many were made to laugh quickly and insult Simon Cowell?

You hear how this had a huge effect on the lives of the participants, their privacy invaded, turning to a life of drugs or alcoholism to cope with it. It creates an image of them that they are unable to escape or change. Everything for our good. Is it worth those brief seconds or minutes?

Do you really like the fighting, the screaming, all the ugliness and silliness that reality TV glorifies? What entertainment do we get?

Ultimately reality TV shows us the ugly side of society. It is the laziest form of entertainment that lacks any creativity. We all have drama, stress, and negativity in our lives; why would you want to watch it and experience it more?

OPINION: Having believed I had watched all the decent, non-conspiratorial documentaries on every available streaming service, my attention was drawn to Tough Nuts: Australia’s toughest criminals. The true stories of terrible and violent mass murderers and rapists.

Until this seemingly endless series, I didn’t realize that Australia seemed to be the center of the universe’s sex crimes and murders.

After a massive frenzy, I find myself staring suspiciously at all the men I see on the bus and in the supermarket. I have to get back on board MasterChef Australia stat.

I watch documentaries because I get bored easily with sitcoms and dramas, unless it’s really stellar, and most definitely mundane reality TV. Although I’m known to watch the Kardashians, just to note the cosmetic changes, as they all seem to transform into Kim. Not original Kim. Kim 3000, the latest model.

Reality show. What an irony. In my experience, reality has very little to do with the “Reality” it is meant to be. Having worked and been associated with people working in reality TV here in Murdery Australia and America, I know there is often very little reality.

From much of the cinematography in survival type shows, shot post-production with extras, until I was told if I wanted to join the cast of a reality show, which I wouldn’t. absolutely never need to spend a night in a tent. I have been aware for 20 years that reality is only a premise. There have been countless talented pop star shows that I believe have been presented this way.

“We want the super talented. The super ugly ones. The super ridiculous and the people who don’t have the capacity to realize that they are completely ridiculing themselves. Oh, and add some average good performers who can’t stand an s. show off, but add some credibility to reality. “

With this kind of casting, I often asked myself the question, out loud and to myself, “Does anyone care about people’s mental health?” I think the general answer is no. After all, it is entertainment. A local man, who I know to be on a certain “specter,” was mercilessly ridiculed after his casting and performance. In my opinion, it was utterly inhuman to throw it away, only to be cruelly mocked when the show aired.

This brings me to the last batch of reality TV shows. Shows that suggest love and romance can be found with a stranger or on a desert island. Knowing someone who was on one of the Desert Islands variety love shows, he was picked by his Hollywood casting agent. Logic.

Everyone on the show was gorgeous. I very much doubt that anyone on the show isn’t with William Morris, or some other top American agency. After all, who wants to see average looking, shy, retired accountants sledding down the beach, right? Now, I admit that I digress into speculation about instant marriage type shows, but I am convinced that these shows are designed simply to include that critical and magical winning formula in any Shakespearean drama: conflict.

First of all, the reluctance to go on a show where you can be presented as any type of character with a few clever sound bites, and a wonderful edit seems silly or, at the very least, naive. To have such a strange TV experience it has to mean that you are seeking fame, notoriety, publicity, or some form of mental or emotional illness.

If that’s not it, then surely you are completely lacking in self-awareness. It is true that some (very few) couples find lasting or lasting relationships, but in general people seem to watch these shows just to hate people, laugh at people, and watch what will no doubt be a series of marriage wrecks. .

Surely many viewers have to escape in this torturous viewing, but I cannot afford to watch, even briefly. I have no desire to see humanity at its worst dysfunction. I gain no joy in seeing men and women behaving badly. Many of us would love to magically meet our perfect match, but a television broadcast of my largely unsuccessful romantic interludes would be appalling, although perhaps excellent dark comedy content.

I believe, and this is not a broad and sweeping accusation, but I believe most “reality” shows fall prey to beautiful broken people and publicity hungry narcissists. Oh, with some unhappy and sad romantics for good measure.

Like lemonade and ice cream, reality TV is a summer staple, but it hasn’t always been that way. Twenty years ago television was a barren summer desert. While people were packing their cars for the holidays or going out to cool their skin in the sun, the networks generally filled their reruns of their sitcoms and dramas that aired in the previous season.

In late summer 1999, ABC launched Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, which aired nightly for two weeks and debuted as a cultural phenomenon in its own right.

In 2000, two days after Memorial Day, CBS launched Survivor. As 16 Americans were stranded on a small island in Borneo, playing a game to outsmart, outdo and survive each other, the odds jumped by millions week to week. The finale, when Sue Hawk gave her speech on snakes and rats, and the jury voted for Richard Hatch to win $ 1 million against Kelly Wigglesworth, was watched by 51.7 million people. In the decade that followed, no other show would have had so many viewers, except for the Friends final.

The television had changed. Survivor and Millionaire proved what MTV viewers The real world and The highway code already knew – that real people could be as compelling and entertaining as scripted characters. And Survivor proved that people were ready and willing to watch new TV shows in the summer. Soon, summer became the place where broadcast networks aired signature summer reality TV or launched new shows (Fox’s American Idol).

Today, 20 years later, summer television could still change. But it won’t be as devoid of fresh new TV shows as it used to be, or what you might expect given the circumstances in the world right now.

The highest rated summer reality show, America has talent, premieres next Tuesday on NBC with new judge Sofía Vergara. But half of the show’s season is usually spent in live performances, and the show couldn’t even complete production of its pre-recorded audition and the judges cut the episodes.

American Idol was in a similar position, and moving his live shows to home performances worked amazingly well. This model may not work well for America has talent and its bombastic production values, which often include special effects, not to mention group performances. A 20-year-old can sing in his living room; a 20-person choir can’t – or shouldn’t – come together to sing in someone’s living room with fireworks in the background.

NBC Dance world also premiered on May 26, and he wrapped up filming his entire season. This is an advantage for shows with top talent, which pre-record their seasons early, often to fit their star’s schedule.

Steph Curry’s ridiculously fun mini golf competition Holey Moley II: the sequel, who returns on May 21, shot his entire season over a few nights in early March. Also, The bachelorette has been postponed, although ABC is committed to filming it as soon as possible. Big Brother, which typically starts in late June and takes three hours a week on the CBS schedule, not to mention the 24/7 live streams that fuel internet conversations, is in limbo. Maybe CBS will find a way to safely lock a group of people in a tiny stage house for more than three months.
