Hulu’s reboot trailer gives an old sitcom a second chance

Huluit is To restart is probably the ultimate meta-moment for Hollywood, and it seems the modern practice of rebooting everything is now being ridiculed by those who are usually the butt of the joke. With shows like More complete house, The Connersand a number of other revivals going on at all times, it was only a matter of time before someone made a show about the concept itself.

This is what happens with To restart. Not To restart like the cult classic CGI sci-fi series. Note the absence of erratic capitalizations. This To restart is a Hulu (and Disney Plus outside the US) original series about a fictional sitcom getting its own modern update with the original cast, and it looks like it’ll include all the drama one would expect. . With a cast of stars, To restart it sounds like it signals that Hollywood is ready to poke fun at itself. Does that mean the joke is dead? Not necessarily.

Hulu just released a trailer for To restart which gives interested viewers a pretty comprehensive look at what to expect. An up-and-coming writer pitches her idea to bring back a classic sitcom titled Go up to the right, leaving a room full of executives speechless. The catch is that she’s planning for the entire original cast to reprise their roles, and many of them don’t particularly seem like ideal candidates for a triumphant return. One has amassed a criminal history while others seem to have tried various failed attempts to advance their own acting careers. So far, it’s probably hitting pretty close to home for a lot of viewers.

Although this is clearly a comedy, To restart looks set to stir up some drama with the reunion of old flames and the ill-aged social opinions of the original show‘s creator. But it’s really the casting that sells it well. To restart features big names like Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer, Johnny Knoxville and Paul Reiser as well as Rachel Bloom, Calum Worthy and Krista Marie Yu among a host of other obviously talented performers. Their skills shine through in the trailer, hinting that this show will most likely deliver quality gritty comedy that show fans love. Office should come in droves.

Telling a meta-story about fading stars trying to recapture their glory days is nothing new in Hollywood. In fact, it can even lead to some really great creations, like Michael Keaton’s 2014 movie birdman. But there’s still a lot to explore in this particular genre of using shows and movies to shine a light on common industry practices. CMA Kevin can fuck himself is an interesting example of this, where it uses the classic sitcom formula as the starting point for a truly poignant psychological drama.

As for To restart, it seems to take a more superficial approach to the whole thing, where the comedy comes straight out of the awkwardness of reliving an idealized past. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, of course. Considering the genuine laughs in the trailer and the heavyweight cast, it seems like this show just might have something in it.

To restart premieres September 20, 2022 on Hulu in the United States and Disney Plus internationally.
