LeVar Burton will host the “Trivial Pursuit” game show after competing for “Jeopardy!” hosting concert


LeVar Burton is finally going to be the new host of a game show. But no, it’s not “Jeopardy!”

Burton has been chosen to host a TV version of the Trivial Pursuit trivia game, Hasbro content studio Entertainment One announced on Tuesday. In addition to his role as host, Burton will also be executive producer.

“Trivial Pursuit is one of the best-known brands in the video game world,” Burton said in a statement. “I am delighted to have partnered with Hasbro and eOne to market this beloved game as a premium television show.”

The Emmy-nominated actor and former host of “Reading Rainbow” expressed his desire to host the quiz in a Tweeter last September: “I’m not gonna lie, I feel like I’ve prepared my whole life for the @Jeopardy host podium when Alex retires.”

He reached out to the show’s executive producer at the time, Mike Richards, to lobby for a guest accommodation location and tweeted his appreciation for an online petition to make him the permanent host of the show. show which has collected nearly 300,000 signatures since last November.

Last July, he finally hosted “Jeopardy!” for two weeks as the game show hosted a rotating cast of guest hosts, from Katie Couric to Aaron Rodgers. Speaking to USA TODAY at the time, Burton said he saw “Jeopardy!” as “a natural and logical extension of what I have been doing for 45 years”, combining entertainment and education.

“I was not prepared for the amazement I had watching the competitors, the board and the audience behind the podium,” said Burton. “Because as a member of the audience we never see that… It caught me off guard. It was a really powerful moment, the world tipping on its axis for me.”

In September, Burton shared in an interview with Trevor Noah that he was no longer in contention for the permanent host position (“Jeopardy!” Champion Ken Jennings and actress Mayim Bialik will be rotating the duties of the host. ‘host for the foreseeable future.)

But as he told USA TODAY over the summer, he initially chose to push for the job in order to avoid remorse over a missed opportunity.
